LEARNING STYLES

A Learning Style is a method a person uses for acquiring knowledge. Every person learns in his or her own unique way. A Learning Style is not what a person learns but how they learn it. Learning Styles help to explain why one child might learn to recite the alphabet after reading an alphabet book, another child might learn the letters by playing with building blocks that have letters on them, and another child might learn the alphabet by singing "The A, B, C, Song."

The seven Learning Styles?

Physical Learners are the toe-tappers, hand-wavers, and fidgeters of the world. These are the people who can't seem to sit still. They simply think well while their bodies are in motion. They relate best to the world through their hands and bodies. Physical Learners will enjoy sports, building, and dancing. When learning new information or developing academic skills, Physical Learners benefit most from role play, manipulating and touching objects, or performing movement exercises. Some examples of Physical Learners applying their learning style to their work are professional dancers, professional athletes, surgeons, and craftspeople.

Intrapersonal Learners are the loners, those who march to the beat of their own drum, and may be described by others as shy. Intrapersonal Learners aren't anti-social, they just think better when left to their own devices. They relate best to the world on an independent basis and through self-reflection. Activities Intrapersonal Learners may enjoy include journal writing, exploring the Internet, and goal setting. When learning new information or developing academic skills, Intrapersonal Learners benefit most from self-paced activities, independent projects, and research. Some examples of Intrapersonal Learners applying their learning style to their work are psychologists, novelists, philosophers, and computer programmers.

Interpersonal Learners are the social butterflies, the helpers, and the true team players. Interpersonal Learners are at their best when they can bounce their ideas off of others and can help friends to solve problems. They relate best to the world through their interactions with others and an understanding of how people work together. Activities Interpersonal Learners may enjoy include team sports and group discussions. They relate best to the world through reasoning, numbers, patterns, and sequences. Activities Mathematical Learners may enjoy include counting and sorting objects, making time-lines, and solving 'brain teasers'. When learning new information or developing academic skills, Mathematical Learners benefit most from performing scientific experiments, following step-by-step processes, and using mathematical calculations. Can my child have more than one Learning Style?

Absolutely. Every individual is able to relate to the world in all of these different ways, therefore, every person has the capacity to use every Learning Style. However, it is typical that an individual has one or two styles that work best.
